As NP’s, we’ll be required to maintain our license by recertifying every 5 years by a combination of at least 1,000 hours of clinical practice and 100 hours of advance continuing education, of which at least 25 hours has to be from pharmacology courses.
I plan to become a member of the AANP (American Associated of Nurse Practitioners) and gain access to their thorough library of continuing education. All courses are AANP accredited and come in different types of formats, such as case studies, test-based articles, videos and voice-over presentations. An interesting type of activity are the Interactive Case Simulations, where you can perform virtual patient assessments and develop treatment plans. The AANP also offers additional monthly continuing education opportunities through their academic journal and educational workshops at their annual live conferences.
For novice NP’s, continuing education is a crucial activity for staying up-to-date with clinical guidelines and evidence-based practices. I hope to work in an environment that values continual improvement and encourages me to acquire new skills.
